Beauty for Ashes

Isaiah 61: 1-3 (AMP)

Our text shows us that any malfunction we have in our lives, generally, and particularly, in the area of our sexuality, can be corrected. We have established that the sex emotions are the strongest physical emotions known to man and they can overrun our capacity for logic and rationality at very short notice. However, God did not leave us helpless; He gave us the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). He has the capability to correct whatever has gone wrong. He has the power and the wisdom to renew, recharge, rewire, renovate, restore and re-fit us. He understands our systems perfectly. He has the ability to rewire our thinking and emotions (Isaiah 61:1-3). Israel celebrated the Jubilee every fifty years. During that time, every slave was set free. Now, we don’t have to wait every fifty years before we celebrate Jubilee. For us Christians, Jubilee is a daily occurrence. So, we don’t have to be permanently enslaved to Satan, sin and weakness in our lives.

The sex emotions are so strong and pleasurable that it is easy for us to go overboard into obsession and addiction in this area of our lives (Proverbs 25:28). Once you find yourself unable to control your actions and emotions and those actions are harming you and others around you or your actions are producing guilt, pain and condemnation, you are operating in a satanic arena (Romans 7). You need to do something about it quickly. God gave man the power of choice and He does not override the human will (1Corinthians 14:26-33).

When we find ourselves in such a situation, how do we deal with it? The following principles can apply to any area of our lives but here, we are applying them to our sexuality. The first thing to do is ask the Holy Spirit for help (2Corinthians 12:7-9). Engage Him from the beginning (James 5:13; Hebrews 4:14-15). This is not the time to pray a one-off prayer; you need to pray continuously. Discuss everything and express all your emotions to God (Ephesians 3:20). Second, you must start your mental re-wiring (Romans 12:2).  Our first battleground is in the mind. Anyone who influences your thoughts is influencing your life. The quality of your thoughts determines the quality of your life (2Corinthians 10:3-5).  Your life is not going to change until you change your thinking. You need to line up your thinking with God’s word. That is why you need to read your Bible to replace the thoughts in your mind (Ephesians 4:22-24). Third, starve the habit (Mark 9:43-48). If your life is going to change, you need to make some hard decisions immediately. Delete the contact information of anyone who is feeding wrong emotions from your phone. Delete pornographic materials from your devices and deliver yourself from wrong associations. Fourth, replace the habit. It is not enough to decide to stop a bad habit. Determine now what you will do to replace the habit – learn a new skill, exercise, do something productive, listen to a powerful message or read your Bible. Don’t dwell on negative habits. Lastly, get help to overcome the addiction and become accountable to someone else (James 5:16). If you need the help of a professional, please see a therapist. We have therapists in town and in church. Check the bulletin for contact information.
