Pastor Sam Adeyemi
We have emphasized, right from the beginningof this year, that God wants to give us rest. The God kind of rest, as we have defined it, is not being in the state of inactivity. It is realising that God has a blueprint for our planet and a blueprint of every single one of us. Finding out God’s plan and finding alignment with His plan is what that rest is about. He didn’t design that plan based on our resources, He designed the plan based on His resources. When you find alignment with God’s plans and purposes, the resources flow from heaven on our behalf and the results are beyond our capacity. This is called Grace.
Romans 8:28 tells us that we’re unstoppable when we find that alignment with God’s plan. We cannot be broke or impoverished because when physical or material resources are exhausted, God has more resources to push out.
Ephesians 2:10 tells us that God has beautiful plans that He made for us long ago even before Adam was created. Finding alignment with His beautiful plans, that is where our rest is. The problem, however, is that simple human nature doesn’t like to do the will of God as seen in Galatians 5:16-18. Our human nature has developed appetite for evil so it is when we are filled and inspired by the Spirit of God that we make the best husbands, wives, parents, siblings children.
An illustration: Can you drive a car that has a flat tire? It would be hard of you try to do it. Even if you force it, you know somethings would be destroyed completely. It is only when there is air is in the tire that it rolls smoothy. That is what it means to be inspired, to be filled with the Spirit of God. In Job 32:8, we see that it’s the breathe of the Almighty that makes Man intelligent and function of his optimum.
We all have the capability to misbehave without the Holy Spirit. There are things you might want to say, for example, then you remember that somebody like you shouldn’t be saying it. The human nature is conditioned to sin. It takes the Holy Spirit to bring out the best version of us.
The best version of your husband is the spirit-filled one. The best version of your wife is the spirit-filled one. The best version of your child is the spirit-filled child. The best version of a parent is the spirit-filled parent. When the Bible says that the breathe of the Almighty within them makes them intelligent what does that mean? It simply means that when you’re under the influence of the Holy Spirit He makes you to see differently.
We are capable of malice. Galatians 5:19-23 tells us that somethings come from the sinful nature, some other things come from the Spirit of God. Let’s be filled with the Spirit of God. The qualities produced by the flesh, the human nature, destroys a marriage; the anger, the bitterness, the jealousy, the envy. The qualities produced by the Spirit of God builds a family; the fruit of the Spirit…the one that comes from the Spirit of God.
Psychometric tests designed by psychologists comes up with the temperament tests, personality tests and they help us to understand ourselves and to understand other people better. They found that opposites attract. It talks about the fact God didn’t create a single being that has everything about Himself. He distributed Himself in us. We will need each other to complete ourselves to support each other to be able to achieve God’s plan and purposes on the planet. It is diversity that makes a team strong. The only challenge is that the temperaments have strengths and they have weaknesses.
The strengths build our families and all our relationships. The weakness is that they create big problems. Introverts and extroverts have strengths and weaknesses. The guy that doesn’t like to talk is attracted to the lady who likes to talk. The lady that doesn’t like to talk is attracted to the guy that likes to talk who is the live wire of the party and the friendly one that can chat up a stranger. Those beautiful qualities magnetize us to other people and then when we begin to live in the same house, the weaknesses start to show up.
What was the temperament of Jesus? Jesus combined the strengths of all the temperaments (Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholy, Phlegmatic) and the weaknesses of none. This tells us something about God. We give our temperaments as excuse for hurting other people. The weaknesses of the temperaments is what is described as the produce of the human sinful nature or the flesh. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, He produces within us whatever it is we need per time to fulfill His plans and purposes.
Romans 8:26 talking about the Holy Spirit and our weaknesses, we see that the Holy Spirit helps our weaknesses. He’s the Spirit of God. He is God. This is where the difference shows in the life of a Christian. We can’t give our weaknesses as an excuse for hurting other people and for destroying our family relationships and any relationship at all. We’ve got an helper and He can help to turn our weaknesses into strengths. 2nd Cor. 12:9-10.
Do your weaknesses move you to pray? Do you ask for help? When someone is about to drive you crazy, do you remember to pray? How do you deal with negative emotions? How do you deal with sadness? How do you deal with fear? Prayer! Prayer brings God in. He said His grace is all we need. His power finds expression best when we are weak. When you pray, He helps you to see things from His own perspective. Satan can make you fantasize problems, magnify seemingly little issues and use them to push you to make decisions or take actions that could cause permanent damage. You say things that someone cannot forget the rest of their life, you cause permanent damage.
It is how you see it. In Genesis 3, Satan changed Eve’s perspective regarding the instructions that God had given them about the tree of life. When she looked at the fruit she saw that it was good for food, pleasant in the sight and desirable to make one wise. That was in her imagination as she had never eaten it before.
Do you remember to pray? Do the weaknesses of your spouse or your children move you to pray? Philippians 4:6 . When you pray, you move from anxiety to peace, from sadness to joy, from thinking crazy thoughts to wisdom. Romans 3:5-6
In Acts 2, the disciples of Jesus were together in a particular place and the power of the Holy Spirit came. The first thing He did was to take control of their vocal cords. He was making them to speak languages that they had never heard before. James 3 tells us that whoever controls your tongue, controls the whole of your body.
The Holy Spirit wants to control what you say because He fills your heart. Acts 2:16-17 shows that the Holy Spirit helps us to see differently. Ephesians 5:18-19 admonishes us that when you’re stressed at home, get filled with the Holy Spirit. Don’t resort to alcohol or drugs.
