Love is the Christian’s identity, it’s our badge, our assignment, the reason we live and the reason Jesus was sent to the cross to die for us.
Most of us are familiar with the John 3:16 scripture that says ‘’For God so loved the world that He gave His only son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life’’ even though it may not have made sense to us while we were not born again.
We are going to examine the story of Joseph who was a Master class lover and mastered Love.
Genesis 37:3 says ‘’Now, Israel loved Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his old age, also he made him a tunic of many colours’’
Joseph’s mother, Rachel had died. Israel loved Rachel so much and it is believed that he transferred the love he had for Rachel to her sons Joseph and Benjamin.
Genesis 37:4 says ‘’But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him’’. This was the beginning of Joseph’s problems, just because he was loved by his father in a special. Some Christians experience that today; before you gave your life to Christ, some people could identify with you but the moment you gave your life to Christ, you experience hatred from them. When you are loved, some people tend to hate you out of envy for the things you have that they do not, just as in the case of Joseph. He grew in love, therefore drew from the love.
Many of us may have been born into hatred or were not loved by our parents, some may have been orphaned at a young age or sexually abused by a relative and felt neglected, thereby growing up with an unadjusted mind, but thank God for His love which supersedes the love of man, we are to draw from the love of God.
Married people whose spouse falls short in any area should be encouraged and allow God make it up to them and fill in the gap. God is the one who can meet all our needs, he loved us before the foundation of the world. He loved us upfront and He is waiting for us to accept that love. Many do not know this and have not taken advantage of it, therefore they keep struggling in sin. Jesus is waiting and His arms are wide open. He says ‘’Come unto me, all you who labour and are carrying a heavy load and I will give you rest’’ in form of peace even in the midst of storms.
As believers, our hearts should always go out to all those around who do not know Jesus. There are issues and challenges out there and people struggle to cope with situations they are faced with. Those of us who know Christ have an advantage, we should therefore spread Christ’s love to others.
1 Corinthians 14:1 says ‘’Pursue love and desire spiritual gifts but especially that you may prophesy’’. 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13 also says ‘’though I speak with the tongues men and of angels but have not love, I have become a sounding brass, a clanging cymbal and though I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and knowledge and though I have all faith so I could move mountains but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow my all goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned but have not love, it profits me nothing…’’
Love is literally the air we breathe, give yourself to the gift which God has given you but you’ve got to start by first pursuing Love like your life depends on it.
You may feel unloved but God thought you worthy of dying for, Christ thought you worthy to die for but He makes us understand that we should go after His love. When we don’t know the love of God, we struggle with our identity, some people feel unloved by God especially when they go through trials and tribulations, but No! His love is in place and has nothing to do with what you’re going through, He does not change His mind concerning those who He has called and those who He loves.
Joseph was someone who understood this love even though he lived long before Jesus came to the earth but God’s love was in place right from the beginning, man failed and Jesus was sent to come to the world to communicate God’s love once and for all to humanity.
Sometimes Christians may come across as arrogant but we are not, we are confident because we carry the presence of God, Christ and the Holy Spirit within us, therefore we shall not be fearful or shaken.
Joseph had a good heart and didn’t refrain from telling his brothers his dreams and probably thought that would make them accept him. Some people are latching unto people who do not love them for attention and validation. Keep loving them but move on.
Joseph went through a lot, sold by his own brothers, framed and imprisoned by Potiphar’s wife, but eventually his head was lifted because he walked in love at every stage of his tribulations, he didn’t allow bitterness fester in his heart, instead he continued to serve in prison, he loved the prisoners and remained a good man on the inside. His dreams eventually came to pass, his brothers bowed before him and he still loved them and expressed it
Today ask for the grace and power to love the unlovable. Love will cause you to triumph wherever you are, you will float above haters, and you will stand out.
