Your Body and Your Health

Pastor Sam Adeyemi

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV)

Robert Murray McCheyne; a very brilliant man with feats of genius at a young age; who worked so hard and was a prominent 19th century preacher died at a young age of 29 years and was credited with a death-bed quote where he said: “God gave me a message to deliver and a horse to ride. Alas, I have killed the horse and now I cannot deliver the message”. He was acknowledging that he had driven his health to the point of no return and it was not God’s fault. Our bodies are important because they are our earth suit. When astronauts prepare to go to space, one of the major observations is that they have a special clothing, a space suit that covers the whole of their body, why? This because the atmosphere in space is totally different from what is obtainable on earth and scientist up until now have not discovered any other planet that has conditions similar to earth that will permit Man to live on it. Earth was specially designed by God for mankind.

If you are going to function in space, you’ll have to be covered by materials that can function in space. To function on earth, then you must have a body that can survive here. We need to understand that our human bodies are highly sophisticated equipment that gives us the capability to function on planet earth and once our bodies cease to function then we are out and cannot function on earth anymore, our spirits will return to they came from. This is why even God needs our bodies for Him to function here on earth, similarly, the devil needs bodies to function on earth as well.

Hence, as long as God allows us to function here then our earth suits need to be in top condition. Now we need to pay attention to the following:

Your body is designed for your purpose. You are on this planet on assignment and your body is designed to help you carry out that function; Hebrews 10:5 shows that Christ’s body, for instance, was specially prepared for His purpose and our case is similar. Let’s note that where the purpose of a thing is not known abuse is inevitable. Why you have a body is because you have an assignment that your body was designed to help you achieve. If you are not working in line with that assignment then, your body is unnecessary. You are male or female, tall or not tall, and every other physical attribute for a purpose. Anything God gives you; He has a purpose for it.

Secondly, you need to accept your body and to thank God for it. One major problem of humans is making comparisons, we compare ourselves with others. Psalm 100:3 lets us know that it is God who made us and not us ourselves. We have to get comfortable with the fact that we were deliberately designed to fit a purpose. Know that God doesn’t make mistakes, He makes marvels; Psalm 139:13-14. There’s yet to be an ugly person we only have people who have opinions on how others look. If to you someone is ugly for instance, please define what your standard of measurement is. That’s why it is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder meaning it is just an opinion. There’s a whole industry right now thriving on adjusting people’s bodies. The critical question to ask ourselves is why should one go through such body adjustment process and for whom?

Thirdly, you don’t own your body. A Christian cannot say, ‘it is my body and I can do anything with it’; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Whatsoever we do to our body to keep it healthy is to be done to God’s glory. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. The body of a Christian not well kept is a misrepresentation of God. We should know that we are just stewards of our bodies while God owns the body. The body should be treated by us as people that will one day give an account.

Next, know your body. Bodies are different. Males have different bodies from females and a woman’s body is more delicate than that of a man. Hence, there’s no point for a woman, for instance, trying to prove something by using her body do things that a man is naturally wired to do. Be sensitive to the uniqueness of the composition of your body and how it reacts to different kinds of food, drinks, environment, etc.

Finally, be continually filled with the Holy Spirit; Romans 8:11. We have to walk in the consciousness of the fact that the Holy Spirit lives in us and His power is imparting life to us and this is the quality of life that flows in God. This is the form of life that swallows up death in victory.
